  1. The earliest way of telling the time was by marking the progress of the shadow cast by a twig struck upright in the ground. In the year 1300 B.C. this was developed by inhabitants of ancient Egypt & Mesopotamia into the sundial. The sundial served for a thousand years until the invention of "Clepsydra", or water clock. This was the first clock with moving parts. Water dripped into a cylinder & caused a floating piston to rise. This piston worked a ratchet which turned the  single hand, the hour hand, of the clock. The mechanical clock was not invented until the thirteenth century, & then it was driven by weights. This meant clocks were of great size & could not be carried about. The spring-driven clock was invented in the year 1450.

  2. The first clock was invented in 1787 by Levi Hutchins approximately in the form that we also have nowadays but historical records show that around 1500 the first clock ever was made by people in the Middle East.
