Where's the mustang power?

I just picked up a 1987 Mustang LX notchback really cheap. It has the 2.3L 4-cylinder, with an auto trans. Whenever I need to accelerate fast (don't judge me), there's almost no power. I floor it, and it seems like I'm only barely pushing it. It kind of shakes, and after a few seconds, after it gets around 1500 RPM, it starts accelerating nicely. Also, when I floor it, the pedal makes a wierd crunching sort of noise. What's wrong?

There is no power.  You bought a 4 cylinder with an automatic.

Take it to a shop you trust since you seem to have a few problems.

There is too many possibilitys To diagnose here take it to a reputable shop& have it checked out.

What you are describing is a torque converter problemm, where it is locking-up prematurely.

Have it test driven by an auto-transmission tech.

It's a 20 year old car that had 88 horsepower when new. It was never a fast car.  How many miles are on it? Not all Mustangs are fast. Unfortunately you have about the worst combo for performance they ever made.
