Where are fuse boxes normally located?

I'm familiar with fuse boxes in Singapore and Malaysia, where the fuse boxes are usually located indoors, usually in store rooms. We took a house in Adelaide recently, and I spent ages looking for the fuse box. I had to phone up the landlady who told me it was outside, on a side wall. Is this common in Australia and other parts of the world?

im in america and ours are all inside, usually in basements or garages or closets.

In the US, they can be anywhere.  On the outside of the house, usually off the garage or the back corner of the house,   In the basement, On the inside of the garage, in a closet.  I've seen them on the living room wall behind a painting the owner stuck there.

I've even seen them on the power pole at the edge of the yard.

They are almost always at about 5 foot off the ground.

If it's an old house or a house that has had an addition built, there could be more than one fuse box, and not necessarily in one location.

There really isn't any universal location.

I'm in America, my current fuse box is in my basement.  I'm moving next week and at my new townhome it's in a utility room that has an outside entrance at the back of the townhome.

The fuse box in our house (in England) is in the cupboard under the stairs... have become quite familiar with it's location, since every time a halogen bulb blows, the fuse for all the lights goes too! :|

Yep very common. Most are on the side of houses here,Or rule of thumb says its going to be closest to the point of attachment where the incoming supply coming onto the property is as this is cheaper.. Or alternatively in a linen closet or near hot water system, if on shared property (duplex etc)

UK here our fuse box is indoors in a cupboard under the stairs also our gas meter is in the same cupboard.

The fuse box is not a waterproof design so it is in a dry location!
