Where can I make better tips?

Question

I am working my second job at the Olive Garden. I'm moving next month and could just move to an different OG in my new town or...try something else. This was my first waitressing job and I'm good at it but I'd like to make a step up to something a little classier and with higher-priced entrees. I don't eat out hardly at all and I'd appreciate some suggestions.

I talked it over with my boyfriend and he recommended the The Cheesecake Factory, for example. If you read this and have worked there...what do you think of it?

Btw, I'll be living 15 minutes east of DC. Thx.

Outback Steakhouse, but I don't think it's that much fancier.

how about Cheesecake factory, macaroni grill, california pizza kitchen, or Spaghetti Warehouse?

Or try looking at local upscale restaurants. A lot of them post on craigslist. Since you have experience in a pretty nice restaurant, moving up should be a breeze!

Go somewhere with more expensive menu items, or, if you don't mind late nights, try working at a bar. I've worked both fine dining, and bartending, and both were more lucrative than chain restaurants. Also, when you move, ask around for some nice places, and judge from there :) Best of luck!

You need to step away from the "chain restaurants". When dealing with the cost of a meal the entree cost is only a fraction of the bill. A restaurant that serves top line food will also have an extensive wine list, cordials etc. You also will not have tables of screaming little kids throwing food. I recently took out 2 other couples with my wife, the food came to about 350 but the wine and brandies etc was about 600$. Also at higher level spots I have rarely tipped under 25%, and have left more. Keep in mind you will have less tables and skill and near perfection is needed.
