Where can i fire a shotgun?

I just bought a shotgun here in Texas and i wanted to do a confidence test with it to see if it works and all. But i dont have the money to go to a range. Where can i go out and fire it that is not illegal? I was thinking maybe a secluded place out in the sticks far far from a residental area. Any help is appriciated.

Go outside of town into a rural area away from houses and livestock (horses, cows, chickens) and fire away.

You dont have to pay to go to a firing range.  Make sure when you shoot, your not shooting towards a road or someones house.

Farmers get a little pissed off when you shoot their cows.
