  2. I help people at my site everyday with this . The best are Dobsonians . 8 or higher will be excellent  sizes . 12 is the best, i have one . As far as price if you email me with what amount you can afford i can help you better.

But here is a basic idea ..

  4. Hi allergic -

My first recommendation is that you find a local astronomy club on line and go to a couple of open observing sessions. There will usually be several scopes set up, and you will have the opportunity to see what you can expect at the eyepiece and at the cash register. You will also get some reasonable info on reliable local dealers that you can go to to buy the right scope for you. They are all quite different, and they are made to do different things. Prices range from $200 (the bottom of the barrel for anything that I could call an instrument and not a toy) to well over $10,000. You can buy a reasonably good amateur instrument for about $600.

To see what is available, you may want to wander around the following sites - the Dobsonians are usually good beginner's scopes:

    http://www.celestron.com/c2/index.php

    http://www.meade.com/

Since you appear to be new to the hobby ("high powered" is a bit of a giveaway in that regard), you should definitely try before you buy. You may be surprised at what you can and cannot see. And you should buy from a reputable local dealer who can help you with the initial setup , etc. We all need help, even geezers like me. So go to a meeting of your local astronomy club; you won't regret it. Best of Luck and Clear Skies to you.

  5. the first thing you need to do is some research, since no telesscope worth buying is sold by "power".

what telesscope to buy and where to buy it has been asked many times around here. please do a search.

only buy from a telesscope store. do not buy from a department store, and avoid ebay like the plague.

  6. Try looking around the internet, but you should expect to pay according to the quality you want.
