  1. Their humps.

  2. As previously mentioned, camels don't store water in their humps - or their stomachs. They store fat in their humps, but as far as water is concerned, the reason they are able (with conditioning) to go for longer periods without water than most other mammals, is that their bodies are designed to be very water efficient. When the body detects that the intake of water is dropping, the camel's body takes action to minimise any loss of water. It does this by having a variable body temperature, rising in the heat of the day, which minimises perspiration (sweating). The coat insulates the body from the heat, and the long legs keep the body away from the hot ground. The kidney function also slows down drastically, producing far less, but more concentrated urine, so the loss of water in the urine is decreased. The nostrils can be closed completely, stopping the dry air from dehydrating the tissues in the nose.

A camel can also handle a higher degree of dehydration before body systems are effected. That means, their body can contain less water in the blood, allowing it to become thicker than what other animals can, while still functioning properly.

When camels are "conditioned" to having to go without water (you couldn't expect it from a camel not used to it), they drink enormous quantities of water - more than what other animals can. This water is stored in the blood cells themselves, which swell to store it, as well as in the tissues of the body. If a human drank a proportionately similar amount of water as what a thirsty camel can, the human would die, because our blood cells can't store the excess the way a camel's can. Then, when the camel needs it, the water is slowly released from the cells, into the flesh of the camel's body.

I hope that info helps - camels are pretty amazing I think - and very well adapted to dry environments.

  3. Well altho most people think they store water in their hump they don't it's in their stomach! Hump is a food resource.

  4. Camels actually do not store water at all. The humps are fat reservoirs. They can go for up to 10 months without water, but take in moisture from vegetation and from the fat layers in their humps.

  5. Camels do not 'store' water as such, they are able to survive for long periods without drinking, yes they take on hugh quantities when they drink, but the whole body is re-hydrated, not just one particualr point.

The hump is a fatty substance which, in times of starvation will be depleted in pretty much the same way as any other creature would lose weight.

    No 'fuel tank' though!

  6. Hump :o)
