Where do sea shells come from??

I was at the beach and my daughter asked me "Where do sea shells come from?" and I went blank! I have no idea and I hate not having an answer for her. I told her i will let her know when i find out. Anyone know?

Just in case your little girl has trouble with exoskeleton, tell her that there are creatures like tortoises or turtles that live at the bottom of the sea and every so often they need to find a new house, so they move out.  Then the sea washes the empty old house up on the beach so she can play with it.

Most sea shells are the discarded shells of marine lifeforms.  Think like crabs, clams, etc.  Their exoskeleton can't grow so they shed them and get a new one when the marine organism is too big for the old shell.
