Where exactly is the counrty Éire?

I am Irish and I live in Ireland (and for those pc among us the Republic of Ireland).

Us Irish don't call it Éire and infact the Irish for Ireland is Éireann, so why must the rest of the world call us Éire?

Éire is the Irish word for "Ireland"

Some people above ^ have said that Éireann is not a noun, but it is; in Irish, if you're saying "the people of Ireland", you use Éireann - muintir na hÉireann

Éireannach is the word for "Irish"

"in Ireland", in irish is "in Éirinn

So you've got 3 words for the noun 'Ireland' (Éire, Éireann & Éirinn) and then there's the adjective :P

For the same reason where I live in Turkey they call England Inglitterra or Scotland Scotia.The foreign interpretation of your countries name is not controlled by your country.

Hello,

         You asked,Where is the country called Ireland, If you can get an Atlas fing Great Britain, ands then find Wales on that map, look to the west of Wales and locate the Irish Sea, travel West across the Irish Sea and your next Land-fall it the East Coast of Ireland.

         Depending on whick Language your Atlas is printed in, will depend on how our Country's Name is spelt, it is Usually Ireland in English printed Atlases, but other that that it could be printed as Eire, or even Irlande, the country is split at the North East part of it and has six of its counties that are ruled and governed by England, and to us Irish people it is known as 'the North of Ireland', but further than that it is still our country, and shoiuld be left for us to govern as one single Country. Ireland forever and I am so very happy to be an Irish Man. I can be just as politically correct as the next person, and funnily enough it leaves me wondering which part of great britain is still Great Britain, seeing as Scotland and Wales have devolution from England, so Maybe little old England isn't as Great as it used to be Huh?. Well if you the Irish don't call Ireland 'Eire', why does it appear on your postage stamps?

I though Eire means Ireland and Eireann means 'Irish'.

I agree with greenorlagh, Eire refers to the whole island not the country and seeing as the north is under british rule the republic of Ireland shouldn't really be called Eire. In answer to DeBurca98, maybe if people in this country did listen to Sinn Fein, we might have a united Ireland and nobody would have to ask this question!

I am pretty amazed you have got this far in life and have not looked at the back of a coin or a stamp.

If we did listen to sinn fein we would live in a counrty which resembles Cuba as they are a socialist party.

Also gerry adams has said that it is illegal to own private property in fact I think he called owning land "theft".

If sinn fein got into power the country would go back 100 years as they could not handle the day to day economic responsibilities of running a country. In the last election they could not back up any of their promises with monetry figures and could not show where they would get the money to spend for any of their proposals. Thats why they only got 5 seats and thats why FF and FG are looking to set up politicall parties in the north so as to offer the nationalist community a real alternative to sinn fein, i.e. a party that can run a country.

also the british government have stated as far back as the 1970`s that they have no political or economic interest in northern ireland, martin macguinnes was at that meeting while he was hed of an IRA section in derry, and from what he said ted heath the PM was there as well as top ranking ministry of defense personel. They practrially told him that a united Ireland was inevitable and relinquished any claim to the territory, in fact macguinness has said that he was flown there by RAF helicopter and was carring a concealed firearm at the meeting.

I think greenorla is talking about the changes to article 2 and 3 of the constitution following the good friday agreement, this changed irelands claim to the north but as you see from below the concept of claim is changed to recognition of a peaceful united ireland without a direct mention of claim but by recognition a indirect claim is still made, it all depends on how you read into it.

The Republic of Ireland is merely a POLITICAL DESCRIPTION of the state.

The name of the State is Éire or in english, Ireland.

Ciara - I mentioned a few weeks back that Sinn Fein had brought this up in the Dail. Their spokesman had stated that why does the Dail Eireann keep using the name Eire - which, he states, means the whole island - especially after the Dail signed up to the anglo-irish accord stating that the the Republic would no longer see the northern six counties as their territory. Therefore Sinn Fein say that the country of Eire doesn't exist BUT the island of Eire exists.

Got too political for me but I see where you are coming from.

Boy am I glad I didn't put an opinion on this one. Aren't we so d**n complicated on this island? Ireland, Eire, Ulster, Northern Ireland, six counties, UK, occupied territories etc etc...

Well I was born in Derry my passport shows me as being born in Eire, Being Irish and proud of it I call all of Ireland Eire !!!

Part of our country may be ruled by another state but its still Eire to me

You're not right. The official name of the country in Irish is Éire. Éire is a noun, and Éireann isn't.

Okay, I posted an answer about a week ago, but as luck would have it, I just learned about the difference in school, today!

So.



Ireland translates directly as Éire from English to irish

You use Éireann when you're speacking in the Tuisil Ginideach. For example:

"Brat na hÉireann."

The flag OF Ireland.

"Muintir na hÉireann"

The people of Ireland.

You use the word "Éirinn" for normal circumstances.

For example:

"Tá mé i mo chonai in Éirinn"

I live in Ireland.

So!

Éire = Ireland

Éireann is used with "of" or the Tuisil Ginideach.

And Éirinn is used everywhere else.

So I was right...it was horribly grammatical!

I do not wish to tell you your countries history, especially as in common with many Englishmen i have Irish blood in my veins.

However i would think the fact that from 1937 to 1949 the official name for your lovely country was "Eire", between being known as "The Irish Free State" 1922 - 1937 and "The Republic of Ireland" 1947 to present day might have something to do with it.
