Where should I place my subwoofer?

It either has to go on flat on the carpeted ground under my desk, or since I don't like accidentally hitting it with my feet, I found about a 1 foot high stand to put it on. However, I am looking for best audio quality, so if putting on the stand would sacrifice any quality I probably won't do it. Does it make a difference from going from the ground to a foot off the ground? Thanks in advance.

I would put it on the ground.  The sub would rattle the stand, and that would drive you insane.

keep subs on the ground, preferably carpet. on the floor the sub will send its sound throughout the room delivering an even and deep bass. raising the sub off the ground will reduce the effect felt by a good sub woofer as well as produce an irritating rattling sound or vibration in some cases.
