Question:

Which UK accent best to learn?

I am a South Korean university student who is interested in learning British English. Though I am now used to speaking with British English (considering the fact that my first foreign language is American English!), I still wonder which UK accent would be the best for me. I have heard that (traditional) RP is declining and Estuary English is on the rise. I have also known that many people on the BBC programmes even speak with regional accents. My preference is an accent that has some traits of traditional RP but other strong intonation (which is quite distinguishable to too-plain accents) -- like BBC presenter Tim Wilcox? I don't like rolling /r/ sounds existing in Irish and USA accent.

  1. If you know how to speak English already (British or American based)then there is no need for u to learn a regional accent! as long as you can speak clearly and can be understood that is good enough!

Tbh it is better to have no accent at all i.e neutral, than a regional one :)

  2. try the Somerset accent, why not listen to a lot of them and choose which you prefer, or just speak as you have learnt it.

  3. Scottish!!!

  6. The most charming & overall superior one - The Cockney accent. Forget the weak sounding Hugh Grant type or those thick & babyish sounding northern ones

  7. Birmingham

  8. Somewhere down south like Deven or Somerset. Or somewhere in the West Country like Bristol or Gloucester. So you can sound like a proper farmer.

  9. A southwest, north-Wiltshire, non-rhotic, non-regional, English accent

  10. Cymraeg wrth gwrs

    Welsh of Course.

  11. None!

I am French and I am learning English as a second language as well.

Did you say you're learning American English in Korea?Because here in France we have to study British English! Stinks, doesn't it?

Anyways, avoid the British language especially in term of pronunciation.

The American accent is much more useful in every day life.In fact British English shouldn't be taught neither in France nor in any other country. And do you know why?

Maybe you don't know but British English is being Americanized!!!Believe it or not but more and more "t" are pronounced "d" by British people,British singers sing with American Accent except some like Kate Nash and Lily Allen which are the worst singers ever, and all cartoons which teenagers and English kids watch are dubbed with American Accents, and this is just the beginning...

As matter of fact I have a British accent but I attend to remove it and have the standard American one.

Believe me you'd be disappointed if you had a British accent(or Scottish...) instead of an American one.

  12. I ABSOLUTLY ADORE..!!!!!

    the liverpudlian accent

    or the geordie accent

  13. I quite like Geordie. You might be best sticking with a southern or Cockney accent. BBC English is a language all of it's own...

  14. The Manchester accent is really cool! But also London as its obviously one of the most common. Except if you have a London accent all the americans say "Your from Lan-dan".

  15. The person who said anything but Liverpool is WRONG!!!

I'm proud to have my accent and it beats any Southern accent any day!
