Hello. Just recently I've become very intersted in Contemporary/lyrical dance. I don't have much dance background...I remember taking ballet in 3rd grade (haha..not much focus there) and Jazz/Tap for like 1 year but that was when i was young. Honestly..i remember nothing of it.

I've checked out the closest studio next to me, and found The Center for Contemporary DANCE. The lady at the register recommended (upon hearing that I was interested in the Contemporary/lyrical I class which it seems is only for intermediate/advanced students) to take Dance Basics.

I'm wondering if I should take that or Beginner Ballet w/ Terminology...

Sorry this is so long!! Any feed back is much appreciated~

I'm really serious about this..Being as passionate for music as I am, I'm confident I can transfer the feelings through my movements..and my mom was a dancer, i'm hoping what they say about hereditary traits and inheriting talents is true : )

Oh and I am 17. But age doesn't limit me~

  1. dance basics may include some of the dance terminology. and it might teach u the really really basic things like alignment and how to point your feet using the correct muscles so that you can do well and learn proper technique in beginner ballet classes. i think you should take the studio directors advice and if the class isn't what your looking for switch to bigger ballet.

  2. Both sound good to me. I would ask to talk to the directer of the studio or a teacher and get their opinion on the two different classes. For that studio dance basics maybe the entry level class. One to take as a prerequisite to beginner ballet.

  3. ballet and jazz are the best to take because lyrical dances are those combined, i just did a lyrical dance this year.

  4. Definitely start with Ballet. It will go more in depth than the Dance Basics Class probably would.  Ballet is the basic foundation that every serious dancer should have. Especially a contemporary dancer. Talk to someone who works at the studio again and see if taking the dance basics class is the only prerequisite or if you could substitute it with ballet.

I think that the dance basics class that she recommended is probably for those who are in a hurry to get straight to dancing contemporary asap. It will just teach you the basics, but ballet goes deeper.
