  1. The 2nd since there wasn't a 3rd Gen. The 1st gen was so bad that people think that all Neons are horrible. While they aren't, they are fair at best. By the time Chrysler finally made a fairly decent Neon, the damage was done. That's why now they make the Caliber. I guess you could call that the 3rd gen Neon. Still avoid the Neon. Here's what was said about it on Wikipedia about th Neon in crash tests:

In 2001, the 2nd Generation Neon earned a "Marginal" rating in an offset frontal crash test conducted by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. This was an improvement over the "Poor" rating earned by the 1st Generation Neon.

In 2005, the Institute carried out side impact tests on 14 small car models, simulating an impact with an SUV. Among these, the Neon performed the worst. The Institute's chief operating officer Adrian Lund stated that the Neon had “...major problems beginning with its structure. This car is a disaster...The structure is poor...If this had been a real driver in a real crash, it’s likely it wouldn’t have been survivable...if safety is a priority, the Neon is a small car to be avoided.”

  2. From personal experience - 2nd Gen DOES withstand an accident. Mine was hit at 35 in the right front, demolished the fender, marker light and headlight. The bumper was popped inward, and the hood was missing paint on the corner above the headlight. No other damage, everyone was fine, car still drives and handles awesome.

I worked for a company that had a 1st Gen as a delivery vehicle and that was just a pile of {insert favorite word here}. I currently have a 2nd Gen (2005 SXT), and only have 2 complaints: 1- even though my car looks awesome, black metallic paint with black interior makes a very HOT summer car. 2- Black interior with 2 kids is far harder to maintain than I ever imagined. The car itself is a good sedan - nice look, sporty but practical insurance (SXT is considered sedan, SRT-4 is considered sports car), and killer gas mileage, I get 38-42 a gallon.

Not much comparison between 1st and 2nd Gen in my opinion.

  3. i think both are good but the second generation was better, either of those are good cars though,i did own a second generation neon though and i liked it a lot better and there are some good upgrades for those vehicles, there isnt a third generation though they discntinued makig those and really i think they should have kept them around, they sold a lot of those cars in the ten year period of time that they was out, good luck.
