Question:

Which fish to put in first?

I have a group of Neon Tetras, and I want to get a Betta fish to put in with them (I've already done the research to make sure they'll get along alright)

Currently my fish are 'boarding' in a friends tank while I was away for 2 months, so I haven't put them back in mine yet. So i was wondering whether it would be best to get the new Betta and settle it into the tank first; or put the Neons back in and introduce the Betta afterwards?

  1. You'll need at least 10 gallons to house them together.  I'd settle the neons in first and then add the betta so it doesn't have a chance to get territorial about the tank.

Some betta's get along fine with other fish, some get along for awhile then go nuts and kill them and some start off crazy.  You never know until you put them together so it's good to have a back up plan.  I had a betta who lived with female guppies for a month with no problem and then killed them all in the space of an hour one day.

  2. it depends on the size of the tank. with neons (in a school of 6) and a betta, it should be at least 10g/40l. it would probably be better to put the neons in first, because in a small space like a 10g/40l, the betta might not be happy to see its tank invaded.

  3. hi put the neons in first my dad had them their so cute and put the new 1s  in after or the neons might feel kicked out or replaced  i love fish peacefull and eligant
