Which golf ball should I use?

Which is the best golf ball for me to play golf with?

If it helps;

I am a 17 handicap golfer.

I play with Ping golf clubs and a Titeilist driver (12.5 degrees.) I play with Pro V1 golf balls.

I hit a drive 250-270 yards on average.

My short irons are usually straight and fairly accurate but my 3, 4 and 5 irons tend to slice.

My putting is reliable.

I just want to get a lower handicap, I have been stuck around 17 - 18 for about 5 years now. I know my swing is the main factor but I think a different ball may help. Any suggestions?

  1. now granted, i am a horrible golfer, but i switched from using callaway to nike one platinums, and my scores have dropped by about 10 or 15.  Not sure if its the ball or the fact that i started golfing a year ago and i am horrible at it though

  2. Stick with the Pro V1's.  You have seem to be doin alright in the driving department.  Don't feel bad about the long irons- not many people can hit them, anyway!

Since your driving isn't much of a problem, I'd say stay with the Pro V1's.  They spin really well, which will only help your short game.

I would suggest switching out the 3 and 4 irons for a hybrid and a gap wedge.  The hybrid will be easier to hit than the irons, which will help you get more Greens in Regulation. The GW will give you another option around 100 yards, another great scoring tool.

It couldn't hurt to take a short game lesson, as well, but that's up to you.

  3. Titlist

  4. You need to open up your shoulders more

And start your backswing with a slight forward movement of the hips.

  5. Bridgestone e6+

  6. Try a quality distance ball.  The NXT Extremes or the HX Hots are very good for distance and are pretty good around the greens.

From what you've said, it sounds like you need to avoid the long irons.  If you cannot put a 4 or 5 iron on the green you might want to try hitting a short iron twice (its two shots either way and you take penalty strokes out of the equation).

  7. stick with titleist but try the nxt tour

  8. It would make for a very interesting game if it were boomerang shaped?

  9. Afraid the ball will not help you to reduce your handicap. Your long irons are your main problem. Check that the club face is actually facing the direction you require. Seems basic but this is often a problem. If you are slicing then the ball position is probably a little too far back in your stance. Try bringing it forward a little and see how it goes. If it improves but doesn't cure then move forward just a little more. In general the ball you use should be the oe that you feel RIGHT with. Forget the hype and make your own choice.

I like a ball that makes a satisfying "click" on impact as I feel that this is the sound that denotes a well struck shot. I use Callaway balls for this reason but as a second choice the Srixon range are well up there.

For longer drives and Ultra seems to do the trick but I lose the feel on putting with them.

  10. Everyone in golf is different. I recommend trying a few of the balls mentioned by the other responses. But, I believe that equipment does not make the player. Maybe have someone look at your swing and determine a problem, if you have one at all. If your swing is perfect as it is, then I would try new balls.

  11. Pro V1 or Callaway HX Tour

  12. If your not playing usga events use a Intech "HOT" i dont think there made anymore but go FAR!!! I find them at walmart/dunhams/ect. all the time on clearance just bought 18 pack for $5 last week at  kmart. Dont use expensive ball's unless your good with your iorns. The covers are the only good thing about them. Can spin them more around the greens. not worth the $45 a doz. for average golfers.

  13. Golf balls have different compressions, 80, 90 etc

You need to experiment with different balls, ideally on a driving range. That is the only way you can find the one that is right for you.

A ball that is the right one for me, may not be right for you and vice versa.

  14. one of the best golf balls is Nike One ball. Tiger Woods uses this Golf Ball
