I believe a noble (lord, lady, knight, and pre-knights (squire and paiges) were higher) like just below the King, Queen, and others in the royal family. I'm not sure what a vassal is.

A vassal could be a noble. All nobles are vassals of the reigning monarch.

A vassal holds his land as a grant from his overlord.   The king could be the overlord and a duke could be his vassal.   that duke may give his land as a grant to another, such as a baron.   He would be the baron's overlord and the baron would be his vassal.   The duke would then be both an overlord and a vassal.
