i normally run a 6-2 but am wondering if a 5- 1 or 4-2 can be just as effective at the frosh level. i realize that the rotations need to play to their strengths but i have always found the 6-2 to be easier to run than the 5-1, plus you have more options upfront. i dunno what do you guys think?

  1. 5-1

  2. i personally think that the 4-2 is the best.  you don't have to worry about backrow attacks, you still have all your passers, and you wouldn't miss that right-back hole when the setter leaves to set on receive.  when i did the 6-2, i played middle back and had to cover the setter so many times because she wouldn't stay back and pass.  hope i helped you.

  3. i enjoy 6-2 better than 5-1

  4. As a hitter I typically prefer a 5-1.  A team not only needs to have 2 good setters to run a 6-2, but also needs to have 2 setters that are similar for hitters to establish a rhythm.  In addition both setters should be good hitters otherwise you aren't getting much benefit from 2 setters hitting in the front row.

As a setter I prefer a 5-1.  It allows me to better establish a rhythm during the game.  Also a good setter can dump the ball and be a good attacker keeping the other team off guard.

  5. 6-1 b/c the setter doesn't run as much :D

  6. I have lately been prefering the 5-1. I'm an outside hitter, and one of our setters hurt her wrist. She has been setting like a blind moose lately... :P

  7. If you have 2 good setters that are about equal and 6 players that can attack, the 6-2 is the best to run.  As you stated, you always have 3 hitters in the front row.

If you only have an A setter and a B setter, you should try the 5-1.  Having 3 hitters on the front row and having a setter that can not get them the ball is going to mean that for half of the match (or more really), your team will not be winning the rallies.  You will be hoping that the other team will lose the rally.

If you have 2 equal setters and only 1 or 2 hitters and blockers, the 4-2 is the easiest and best to run.

  8. this truly all depends on your team.  last year we ran a 5-1, and every time our setter was front row, the opposing team just crushed line on us right over him.  This year we had a new setter come in and we are now going to be using a 6-2.  Although it gives more options up front, it also makes play easier on the opposition and takes more time to adjust to both setters.  At higher levels 5-1 is the way to go.  But if you don't have the setter for it, then you simply can't.  An idea that you may want to think about trying is running a 5-1 with 2 setters.  This works well if you have a shorter setter with good defensive skills as well but not very strong at the net, as well as a taller setter that can block and play net well, but not as strong on defense.  Shorter setter plays back-row and when he gets to the front, instead of sub-ing in a weak-side hitter, sub in the taller setter.  therefor keeping the 5-1 status while using 2 setters.

  9. i like the 6-2

  10. Any really, no preference

  11. I'd prefer 6-2 or 5-1, because the rotation and defense is more organized. 5-1 (to me) is basically 6-2 in the back, 4-2 in the front.
