1. It originates from Baby, which was a popular romantic expression around the time of Elvis Presley. I don't know how long it had been around by then.

  2. The word Babe is from the Jazzical era of the 1920s but became more popular during the Rock and Roll era. It is a word often used in the Blues.

  3. The word "babe" is at least 600 years old. Its first appearance was in 1312-- "How this babe all bloody cried". Its meaning then as infant, or a young child..

By 1915 it was being used to mean a girl or woman in slang. "She's some babe."

The 1933 edition of "Who's Who in Baseball" gives this explanation of Babe Ruth's nickname: "The nickname "Babe" was originally applied to him when he joined the Baltimore Orioles in 1914. Coach Steinam, who was owner Jack Dunn's right-hand man, greeted the very young rookie when he came into the ball yard, shouting to the other players: 'Boys, here's Jack's New Babe!"
