Ballet roots back to all kinds of forms of dance stemming from Greecem Rome, Asia, and other countries.

King Louis XIV is known as the "founder" so to speak because he was very interested in ballet.  He brought it to the court in the castle and showcased dancers.  He also encouraged the study of this art form and also encouraged the building of ballet schools.
