  1. If you mean who are the modern-day equivalents of the Romans I'm afraid the answer would be no one.

Neo-Conservatives to the contrary we really do live in a multi-lateral world where the desire for people to have a simple life with straightforward choices is constantly running into the agendas set by people with different needs.

Democracy in real terms exactly exists in ways it didn't in the past.  And in fact that is one of our major problems.  Two of the most lucrative businesses in the world today are computer crime and illegal drugs.  Now they are extremely different, however what they have in common is that they rely on people making choices which the governments may not sanction from a position of empowerment.  Thus a substantial number of Chinese intellectuals use proxy servers to surf the web:  this circumvents their censorship and it's almost considered respectable (certainly it is more respectable to the Chinese Government than loosening up their censorship laws).

Bluntly, the Romans imposed their culture and their idea of order very deeply on their neighbors in a way most of the so-called great powers aspire to -- but can't.  Our culture owes more to the "Barbarians" than most of us will believe.  It is not, despite what people think, one peoples' culture.

  2. If you're inferring to Rome at the top of her game, that would be America (USA).  If you're referring to Rome in her declining years, probably Russia.  If you're referrng to Rome at her beginning that would be China.

  3. People who live in the city of Rome, Italy.

  4. italians

  5. If you are referring to Romans as a culture or a nation, then there's no doubt that it is the Italians. But if you are referring to Romans as a symbolic definition of world power, I would say it is the Americans.

  6. Anybody in Italy really.  That's where Rome is, after all.  But Romans don't exist.

  7. Probably America sadly, contouring everything and about to lose it all.

  8. The Italians.

  9. U.S.A.
