I know the small blind bets first, then the big blind, and everyone else who wants to stay in, but …..

In the second round of betting, after everyone sees the flop, which player bets first? ….and then which player bets first after the flop…which player bets first after the turn? ….River?

  1. person the the left of the dealer ...small blind if he's still in...would bet first always

LEFT OF DEALER.  This is why you use a dealer button.

  2. It's the same for every round of betting in the hand.

The small blind bets first, as long as he still has cards.

7 card stud is different.  There' the highest face-up hand bets first.

  3. I assume you are talking about Hold'em.

    Pre-Flop

The small blind and big blind are already considered to have bet, by putting their blinds in before the cards were dealt.  So the first person to act is the player to the left of the big blind.  He can either call the big blind, raise, or fold.

On the Flop / Turn / River

The person to the immediate left of the dealer opens the betting.  The dealer is not necessarily the person handing out the cards, but the player who holds the button.

So the player to the left of the button (which would be the small blind usually, if he is still in the hand) gets to act first.  He can check (a bet of nothing), bet, or fold.

    Heads Up

Once play is heads up between just two players, one player is the button, and they are also the small blind.  The other player is the big blind.

So the button gets to decide if he wants to equal the big blind or raise, or fold.  Before the flop.

On the flop, turn and river, the non-button player acts first every time.
