Yes, it is very frustrating when people have trouble with your name.  Yes, it is very frustrating when they are disrespectful and rude.

However, you are in good company with millions of people, including a very prominent Democrat whose name is also not the usual Anglo-Saxon Smith or Jones.  

Some names just sound funny to some folks, such as Mark Spitz, the Olympic swimmer.  He had to have been hassled over his name over the years.  

Some people change their names for a multitude of reasons, such as former Senator Gary Hart whose family name was not Hart.  If you don't want to do this,  please understand that I am not suggesting that you do.  

Please hold onto your temper, your sense of humor, your respect for people.  Don't let others push your buttons or let them control you into poor behavior.  Hang in there.

When introducing yourself, make it something funny. For example,

"My name is Osama, like the crazy terrorist, except I'm really a great guy. It's really quite a common Arabic name, such as John or Jennifer in English."

Hey Osama,

1) Explain to them the "bin"

2) Don't let your name be tainted, defend it! Some people are incredibly narrow minded and if you need to let them know how their reaction makes you feel don't be afraid! There is no need to be aggressive, just let them know and ask them to not make fun of you because it's rude, if they persist then keep on reminding them! Don't let them get to you. If you need to go to authorities then do so

3) Don't shy away from your name because it is who you are and you can't ever run away from that. There are millions of people called Osama and you have the right to be proud of your name

4) If things get out of hand and you can't control their reactions then make a nickname in which you are comfortable with. This should be the last thing though

I'm no expert but I have been bullied for my name and I know how to deal with these things.

That is sad.  I think the only way to get through the ignorant is by teaching them the meaning.  Most people find it very easy to hate those things that they do not understand.  Gratefully, most people should not find it easy to directly hate a person in front of them and this should give you an opportunity.

In a way you have an opportunity to pre-screen the people who could become you friends by their reaction.  Most intelligent and curious people would like to know more, especially about a culture that is different from them.

Overall, it's just bad historical timing, like all the German people in America who had a common German name of Adolf. Hang in there it's not you who they hate but Osama Bin Laden.
