  1. It was found by the guy who planted it in the first place. Charles Dawson. Although there were many who were never found out. This is one of the reasons why Anthropology is in the state it is in today.

  2. I know you didn't ask this, but I find it interesting to point out that Piltdown man suggested an anti-darwinian early twentieth century interpretation of evolution. It suggested that brains evolved first and that modern humans had a significant evolutionary history in europe.

Noted anatomist Weindereich (multiple origin hypothesis) noted it was fake as soon as he saw it shortly after its discovery.

  3. I believe It was found by Dr. Lewis Leekey and his wife digging near Piltown in Africa.  Later , he  was accused of falsifying his discovery and I do not know if that was resolved.

  4. the 'Piltdown' man was a hoax. Charles Darwin was dead by then. The guy who 'found' the skull fragments was named Charles DAWSON.

  5. Charles Dawson, not Charles Darwin, was the prime suspect because he was involved with several other forgeries, related to finding archaic bones, which were similarly stained with a type of iron compound...

He claims workers in a gravel pit found the human skull, jawbone (of an orangutan) and teeth (of a chimpanzee), four years earlier, but why come out with the find in 1912 ? (four years later)...

Needless to say, it took 40 years to uncover the hoax!
