  1. William Webb Elis Coincidentally at a school called rugby

  2. It is attributed to William Webb Ellis who during a football game picked up the ball and ran with it.

This caused a great deal of confusion but was not a that point illegal in football. However the entertainment factor that arose and the interest that was caused lead to a new game being invented - Rugby Football.

It was given the name Rugby because the above happened at Rugby private school for boys.

Football had a rule change to prevent the picking up of the ball during open play and Rugby was played by those who liked the concept of the new ideas.

William Webb Ellis has always been credited with creating the game and hence when the world cup was devised the trophy was named in his honour.

  3. About 5 miles up the road from Rugby there's a village called Lutterworth.

About 450 years ago the Lutterworth village idiot, called Simple Bill, kept smashing people's windows so they chucked him out of the village.

He wandered off down the track (the A426 or M1 wern't there yet . . ) and found a nice haystack to sleep in.

All the other village idiots in the surrounding area heard how comfortable Simple Bill was and went off to join him.

Before you knew it, a whole town had sprung up, full of idiots from all over, and it was called Rugby because, being idiots, they couldn't think of a better name - and that's how Rugby was invented.

Tis said that even to this day the folk of Rugby be a little q***r. One thing that has changed though is the price of haystacks. They are now selling for anything up to a cow and two goats.

the trophy for the world cup is named in his honour

  7. The legend of William Webb Ellis, who is credited with first picking

up the football and running with it, has doggedly survived the

countless revisionist theories since that day at Rugby School in

1823. That the game should have its origins in an act of spirited

    defiance is somehow appropriate.
