  1. its a queen; and i believe its queen margrethe II

  2. She´s a Queen.  Margarethe.  Wow!  She's been on the throne for a long time, hasn´t she?  Not nearly as long as Elizabeth, but quite some time. She´s been in power since 1972.  I just looked it up.  I knew she was the reigning monarch the last time I was there in the 1980's.

  3. The current Danish head of state is Her Majesty, Queen Margrethe II of Denmark. She inherited the crown from her father, King Frederik IX who died in 1972. On the occasion of the accession to the throne on 14 January 1972, Queen Margrethe II became the first female Danish Sovereign under the new Act of Succession.

Margrethe was not born to be monarch, even though she was the eldest child of a Crown Prince, later King. At the time of her birth, only males could ascend the throne of Denmark, owing to the changes in succession laws enacted in the 1850s when the Glücksburg branch was chosen to succeed. As she had no brothers it was assumed that her uncle Knud would one day assume the throne.

The process of changing the constitution started in 1947, when it became clear that Queen Ingrid would have no more children. At this time Margrethe's uncle Prince Knud was the Heir Presumptive, but the popularity of Frederik and his daughters and the more prominent role of women in Danish life started the complicated process of altering the constitution.

That proposal had to be passed by two parliaments in succession and then by a referendum, which was held on 27 March 1953. The new Act of Succession permitted female succession to the throne of Denmark, according to male-preference primogeniture, similar to that in use in the United Kingdom. Princess Margrethe therefore became the Heiress Presumptive. The current heir-apparent is her eldest son, Frederik, Crown Prince of Denmark, followed by his son, Prince Christian of Denmark.

  4. Me--Alexander the great

  5. Right now, Denmark is like England in a sense...there is no king, but there is a queen.  Her name is HM the queen Margrethe II of denmark.  her husband is HRH The Prince Consort Henrik.

  6. The first and third answerers are right, there is no King of Denmark at the moment. The Queen is Margrethe II (Margaret if anglicized). Her husband is Henri de Laborde de Monpezat who took the name Hendrik (Henry) when he married Margrethe. A few years ago he was created Prince Consort in an official sense although he was "a" prince consort at the moment of her accession.

The last king of Denmark to this date was Margrethe's father, Frederick IX. He anticipated having no male heirs and in 1953 cognatic primogeniture was introduced, allowing a female to succeed if she had no brothers. Margrethe was therefore Heiress Presumptive until she became queen. Had a brother been born, she would have been displaced in the line of succession. There *were* male heirs available, the first being Margrethe's uncle Knud (Canute, if you want to anglicize it) who was Hereditary Prince of Denmark. He kept this title for the rest of his life.
