  1. Bourgeoisie is a classification used in analysing human societies to describe a social class of people who are in the upper or merchant class, whose status or power comes from employment, education, and wealth as opposed to aristocratic origin.

  2. Comes from Karl Marx (I think the Communist Manifesto and Das Capital) - he talks of two classes - the bougousie and the proletariat.

However - it isn't as simple as that, he writes about:

    landowners/aristocracy

bougousie (middle class who control things but are not major owners)

the petit bougousie (lower middle class who supervise and have less influence)

    the proletiariat - the workers

the lumpen proletiariat - working class who don't work and make no contribution

peasant - workers on the land

  3. bourgeoisie was a classification created in the days of the industrial revolution when production was the back bone of a growing global economy.

Bourgeoisie is the class of people who were responsible for that production, either by means of owning or running production.

  4. bourgeoisie are the people that control the means of production...............perhaps they own factories like GM

the proletariates would be the people who work at those factories

The way I remember: "The bourgeoisie are 'the Man' keeping everyone else down."

  5. The ruling class.

The owners of the means of production.
