  1. First, flags aren't knitted. A knitted flag would be way too heavy to fly.

Second, the Betsy Ross story has no historical basis. It's based only on a letter written by Ross' grandson long after her death, and in the letter he clearly states that it's only a story he heard from his grandmother, he doesn't know if it's true, and it requires a great deal of historical investigation to confirm or deny. He even conducted his own extensive search of US records and said he found no evidence to support his grandmother's story.

And a great deal of the particulars of the story don't even remotely stand the test of that historical investigation.

First, at the time when Ross was supposedly approached about the flag, there is no record of any activity in the Continental Congress over designing a national flag, and in fact no national flag was declared until after the Revolution ended, several years later.

Second, Ross' great contribution to the national flag was supposed to be that she suggested five pointed stars instead of six pointed ones. But in fact, six, seven, and eight pointed stars were just as commonly used until the 1800s, and the type of star was never specified by Congress.

And finally, Betsy Ross never claimed any credit for the flag to congress. Francis Hopkinson did try to claim credit, and even sent congress a bill, but they denied his claim and stated that many people had a hand in designing the flag.

  2. The first flag was allegedly sewn by Betsy Ross in 1776; although many historians believe that Francis Hopkinson was the actual designer of the flag..
