If these were your choices for a web designer for your laid-back company, who would you hire?

Choice 1: Recent grad, less experience, great design ideas, great personality, could be molded into what he need, may require a little coaching to get there, excellent portfolio

Choice 2: No education in web design, some experience (listed personal website as portfolio, which was awful), great ideas, fast learner, may not be staying for more than a year

Choice 3: Amazing experience, education, intense, not very personable, could take the company to a new level, may not stay for long, smaller salary that s/he may not take, talks WAY too much (told us his/her weight, age, etc), only looked at my coworker, interrupted us constantly (he lead the conversation, no matter how hard we tried)

  1. 2 is out definitely. no question about it.

#3 would be difficult to justify considering that intense personality types produce a lot of conflict. they often want to do things their own way and are unwilling to compromise.

    So my choice is #1.

  2. I guess number 3, since that person is considered the most productive, despite how rude he/she is. Anyway, business is separate from feelings.

  3. 1 would be my choice for just about any occupation.  I like working with people who are willing to learn new things but also have a background in the field.  I also prefer to work with those people who are willing to stay for longer then a year.  If this person "plays well with others" that's even a better bonus.  I work in a really small company with a laid back atmosphere so it's important that we all can get along.

  4. The recent grad.  And plus, they prolly got student loans to pay lol.  But I would definitely take the recent grad, especially since you can shape them into what will work with your company.

  5. I'd go with Choice #1.  You could probably start them off at a lower salary since they are a newbie to the job force.  And the fact that you can mold them is great.  One thing you have to remember, though, is if you have the man hours available to provide more training to someone who needs it.

    Good luck!

  6. Since you're not willing to pay that much, it looks like your option is Choice 1. And don't worry, none of them will stay for long once they have some recent experience under their belt.

Why would a small company hire a full-time Web designer anyway? I thought they always outsourced that stuff.
