Question:

Why Do Vegans Ignore this?

Why is it that so many vegans use items like tomato sauce that have "natural flavoring" in them? If you google natural flavoring and then FDA, you will clearly see these usually come from eggs or meat byproducts.

Do people not know? Not care?

  1. @ the first answerer- You, as a human, are made of meat too. Do you eat humans? Precisely.

Vegans are generally very good at checking labels. Many products are certified by the Vegan Society, and bear the society's logo.

Anyway, have you done a survey of *all* vegans to make such a wild claim?

  2. Vegans choose not to eat any foods derived from living or dead animals - no meat of any kind (no red meat, poultry, white meat, fish etc.), no animal milks (no cow's dairy products, nor sheep, goats etc.), no eggs, no honey, nor any other animal products (no gelatin, cochineal, shellac etc.)

I'm a vegan, and i care. I think you got the wrong end of things with this question, you clearly don't no what a vegan is, next time you ask a pointless question like this, get a definition of what you need to know.

  3. If a Vegan eats something with animal products in it, it is because they don't know.  If you know someone who is doing this maybe you should give them the heads up and tell them about  the animal products in their food. They would probably like to know about it.   It is a very simple thing to make your own tomato sauce from scratch.

  4. Why do you make general comments and conclusions about vegans? I assume most vegans here are smart enough to read labels.

By the way, I personally never buy any precooked or ready products anyway (how hard is it to make a simple tomato sauce?)

But thanks for being so concerned. :)

  5. Well I'm not sure how many vegans you know, and how you came to this conclusion. But the majority of vegans are well informed about the ingredients in their products. This includes natural flavorings. Natural flavors can be animal or plant derived. But most tomato based sauces are generally just that... tomato based. I'm yet to find a brand of tomato paste or sauce with animal flavors. so yes we do know about natural flavors and most do care. but i completely disagree with your assumptions that we neither know, nor care or that tomato sauces contain animal products.

  6. Whereever you got this information, it was probably incorrect.  They would be required to clearly state that there were eggs or dairy for those with allergies.  Otherwise, they could get sued if there is a health issue.

  7. The real question is why dont vegans just cook for themselves and stay away from industrail made products?  I thought they were against industrial food.  If you get fresh, whole, organic foods and make it yourself, you always get the best stuff.  Who knows what died and fell into the tofu?

  8. Strange.  I actually BOUGHT a jar of tomato sauce today - and it has listed "natural flavoring" - and it also has the "V" on the label listing it as "Vegan" - and all the ingredients are listed on the label.  It is even a store brand!

But if such really bothers you - you can always write to the company and ask them to explain the "natural flavoring" for a particular product if it really bothers you and you have a real concern.

Maybe you need to research this a tad more?

  9. I always read the ingredient list on any item I purchase. I try to only by organic food and items that are marked vegan.

And yes, this applies to tomato sauce.

  10. wow i didnt know that

and hot mama if you dont care kindly get out of this section. I mean this is a vegeterian section. Troll somewhere else!

  11. Natural flavoring can come from plant or animal sources.  How, exactly, have you determined that "so many" vegans ignore this?  I belong to a vegan online forum with over 5,000 members.  We trade information when we've contacted manufacturers to find out the sources of natural flavors in various products.  Or, you know, choose a tomato sauce without any ambiguous ingredients.

  12. Because they don't.  Some natural flavorings do, but most come from plant parts.  Who ever told you that is a liar.

  13. I'm sure that they would think about it more than you would.

    Don't kid yourself.

LOL, exactly what brands flavor their tomato sauce with eggs and meat?

  14. How do you know that "so many" vegans do this? Do you really know that big of a percentage of the world's vegans?  I'm fairly confident that most vegans know that natural flavorings are sometimes animal-based and therefore either avoid them or call the company to ask whether they're from an animal or vegetable source.  It's silly to ask a question that generalizes something about all vegans...most of us are quite well-educated about what we can and can't eat.

  15. The definition of “natural flavor” under the Code of Federal Regulations is: “the essential oil, oleoresin, essence or extractive, protein hydrolysate, distillate, or any product of roasting, heating or enzymolysis, which contains the flavoring constituents derived from a spice, fruit or fruit juice, vegetable or vegetable juice, edible yeast, herb, bark, bud, root, leaf or similar plant material, meat, seafood, poultry, eggs, dairy products, or fermentation products thereof, whose significant function in food is flavoring rather than nutritional” (21CFR101.22).

Therefore: natural flavoring can come from fruits, veggies, OR meat.  It doesn't mean it does.  That really depends on the food you're eating.  So an item can be vegan and still have natural flavoring in it.

  16. Actually, there are different kinds of natural flavoring, flavoring coming from animals and flavoring coming from plants.

vegans eat the ones from plants, vegan check the labels.

What do you mean ' so many vegans '? become a vegan yourself before you give out random facts.

  17. Thats a big generalization, there.

PS: First answer: No, youre not a straight out carnivore because Im sure you dont live off meat alone and any caring God wouldnt want you to contribute to the suffering of billions of his creations. And there not made of 'meat' theyre made of muscles tissues and blood just like humans.
