I was having bad heartburn, went to the doctor, was diagnosed with GERD. I started taking Prevacid, which worked for about 6 months. Then the heartburn comes back full force. My doctor switched my medication to Protonix and the heartburn went away again. But now, only 3 months later, the heartburn is back! I have had an upper endoscopy, and there is no ulcer. So why does my heartburn keep coming back?

  1. I have had minor heartburn for a while.  I just had to chime in because the bra I wear can definitely make a difference. (too tight = heartburn)

I think there are so many environmental things you can do to help.  Are you doing those as well as taking the medication?

  2. Have you had a food allergy test done?

If you have long standing heartburn, chances are that it is actually acid reflux disease.  This is typically caused by eating something that causes your stomach to create too much acid.

For instance, wheat could be a trigger for the acid... You eat a sandwich on wheat bread...presto - heartburn.

Same can be said for almost any food... Your doctor can test you, or you can do some research on common food causes, and eliminate foods for a day or two at a time to figure out what it is yourself.
