Miguel Hidalgo start it .Mexico was called New Spain by the time,  check  Jose Maria Morelos, Allende, Guerrero, Aldama,  

check Agustin Iturbide first emperor of independent mexico and the tratado the córdoba, where spain tries to keep domain on mexico

Also the intentions of a group of conservatives brought an Emperor from Europe in the 1860´s,
