Why are Americans so fat?

I was at Red Lobster the other day and their were four people who were so fat they couldn't even fit in between the table and the seat

this question is referring to all americans when actually it should only be referring to 4 people, and how do you know they were Americans, did you ask them. Ever think maybe they enjoy eatting, or just a though that they didn't choose to be that big it just happen. And why do you care what these people are doing anyway, are you afraid they might come over and find you tastey and eat you.

1.) Fast food = cheap food. If apples are $1.79 a pound and a kid's meal is $1.99 and you're feeding your family on a budget, are you having an apple for dinner or a burger, side, drink, and toy?

2.) Fast food = well, fast food! People are busier now than they've ever been, as well as generally not getting enough sleep/good nutrition to feel energized. Fast food is a way to feed your family without having to spend time planning, shopping, and preparing for meals.

3.) Because we as a nation are busy and often distracted, we don't make time to eat. Thus, when we do eat it's usually unhealthy and we eat TOO much because we're so hungry.

4.) Meat, especially beef! Meat in general is extremely high in saturated fat and cholesterol, and doesn't do a good job filling you because, duh, it has no fiber. And like it or not, if you're going to eat meat your might as well know where it comes from. Cows are fed hormones such as progesterone and testosterone that encourage them to become as fat and delicious as possible, and these hormones affect our ability to gain weight, too. People say that lean meat is a great source of protein, but so is the bean/legume family, soy, etc., and they're not packed with hormones that make us fat, tense, and angry.

5.) Genetics. We are descendents of people who survived drought and famine by having the ability to store fat better than everyone else.

There are a lot of reasons why people are fat, and there's a lot more to it than what I just said. Just remember that trying to be an open-minded, considerate person is the best way to go no matter what the situation...

I think because we have an over-abundance of resources and they are waaaay too readily accessible.  Fast food- check.  Video on demand- check.  Video games we can play with friend and not leave the house- check.... the list goes on.  We are lazy because technology makes it easier and easier to never have to leave your house or actually talk to human being. Just my thoughts... and I've made the same observations you have... pretty sad really.

Yes I had the same experience at Disney world this year. Approximately 2 in 3 people are obese in the US at this time. This is largely due to the fact that in 1992 the government began publicizing the idea of a universal diet with grains and grain products at its base. This diet recommended that people consume 6 - 11 servings of grains per day. That caused a heavy load on the body to produce insulin and most people cannot handle that kind of abuse. After a while the body stops responding to insulin and fat storage and retrieval become abnormal. This usually doesn't happen until after someone has become very fat. This is also why it is possible for all people to develop diabetes. That's all for now  - FYI there is a LOT more to story! Well because first of all there is so much technology and stuff like cars that do stuff for you so people never exersise and there are so many fast food restraunts and people are usally in to much in a hurry to cook a healthy meal these days! Also the unhealthy food is usally the cheapist and best tasting!

I think a lot of Americans are fat because the USA produces a lot of cheap, high-carb and fast-digesting food products.  If you look at most restaurant menus, one meal will consist of more than double what you're supposed to eat as a meal.  

1000 calories is reaaal easy to eat when you have a burger, fries and a soda and you should really be eating about 400-500 calories in a meal.

Too much fast food. Huge portions. Long work hours to survive in this s hitty economy. After all that theres no time to workout. I am skinny only because I have a fast metabolism otherwise I would be disgustingly fat like the rest of us americans

think about the fatty fast food we have. like McDonald's,burger king and wendy etc. some people have something in their body that won't let them stop eating. they don't feel full never.

Once when we were in the US, (florida to be exact), in a restaurant a woman couldn't fit between the table & seat & instead of walking away in shame, as I would of done if it were me, she caused a fuss in front of everyone there & demanded a seat be found for her! ...Truly mortifying!

Americans are hooked on junk food and fast food. Its quicker and more convenient, especially when the economy is so bad that lots of people have to work two or more jobs to support their family. No one has the time or the money to cook a healthy meal at home. Processed foods are too readily available and they are the WORST kinds of foods for you. Plus advertisements are splattered all over the TV and bill boards, you just can't escape it.
