  1. I have plenty of male teachers.

I don't know. Maybe the job of being a teacher interests women more than it does men.

  2. this year (11th grade), for the first time in my life, i have more male teachers than female teachers. one of my 2 female teachers said that when she was younger and choosing a major, her father suggested teaching because jobs such as teaching and nursing are "women's jobs". she picked teaching anyway, but not for the reasons her dad specified. i guess back in the day teaching was a very female-suited job. but i think things are changing now- there are just as many (if not more) young male teachers as young female teachers in my school. 2 out of 3 of my male teachers are young (under 30).i also see certain subjects dominated by one gender- the english department is made up of mostly women, while the history department is mostly male. in science, i find chemistry is female-dominated, while physics is entirely male. the teacher make-up of my school is actually kind of interesting. =)

  3. Depends on what grade you're talking about.  In elementary school, most are women but as the grade goes up the larger the fraction of males.  It has something to do with salary levels.

  4. Well, our school has a lot of male teachers but even more female teachers. Really, I think the reason for all the women is the maternal instict in all of us women. I mean, teaching is really just helping little kids. Giving them a headstart in life. That's why i my opinion. So, yeah, that might be the reason.

  5. I once read this joke about ESL teaching: what's the difference between a large pizza and an ESL teacher? A pizza can feed a family of four. Since the rolemodel of a man is to support their family I think there is your answer :)

  6. In elementary school, there are the (dwindling) beliefs that only women should be taking care of and teaching children. The pay level is also low, so many men choose to use their college degree to get higher pay.  I have a Masters in Ed. and started out with $27,000/year.  My friend had a 2-year degree in nursing and made $50,000/year plus overtime.  You really have to love children in order to work for a pay difference like that!

  7. Women are more nurturing and less likely to be acused of sexual misconduct like men. We were wired to bear children so we have a greater tolerance for putting up with annoying behaviors like whining.

  8. Actually, as history has shown it, teaching has always been a male majority occupation. With decrees such as the Equal Pay Act and the Civil Rights Movement in general, there came a huge surge of females wanting to enter the education field. Since then, the trend has continued.

In fact, you're looking at one. I'm going to college to become a high school teacher.
