Why are international flights so expensive?

It may seem like a bit a dumb question to ask, but I would love to fly international and meet some of my friends and see loads of places, but the price tag on a flight alone is so high. Why is this?

Well.. first of all you travel farther, and your spending your American money on things in a diffrent economy, so they have to charge a little more. Also cause gas is soo expensive now, and they have to pay the airplane workers and everything just adds up... i know it really sucks though.

It's really because of fuel costs.  In the past there were lots of discount flights overseas but now you really have to hunt.  I wish you good luck!

There are a few things that has made the air fares for international prices to go up. First fuel. This is killing most of us here at the airlines. The other big thing is taxes. Example taxes in Europe alone is 400 USD per person. That kills alot of the air fares that are out there.

Fuel price hikes and increased airport taxes, I'm now paying £400 more to Brazil than I was last year. As I travel a lot this is really beginning to bite.

right now because of fuel costs, the airlines have imposed a 151.00usd fuel service charge each way, thats why the fares are so high, as you are paying an addition 300.00 round trip just for fuel costs

There is some truth in the answers above but it also depends on where you are going.  Some countries control (limit) flights in and out as well as the number of airlines allowed to enter.  No competition . . . higher prices.
