  1. Back in the realms of history...   Women become Dames.   Do you remember the old saying though  

    In days old, when  knights were bold

    And women weren't invented

    I will not complete it as it is a bit rude.

  8. Yes they can. Dame is the female equivalent of address to Sir for a British knighthood. In the UK honours system, this can be the title of a woman who has been awarded the Order of the Bath, Order of St Michael and St George, Royal Victorian Order, or Order of the British Empire.

    Because there is no female equivalent of a Knight Bachelor, women deserving an honor of this rank are appointed Dames of the Order of the British Empire instead. Formerly, the wife of a knight was called a Dame, but this usage was replaced by "Lady" during the 17th century.

    In June 2000, Queen Elizabeth II made J.K Rowling (Harry Potter's creator) an officer of the Order of the British Empire.

    Helen Mirren (British actress famous for playing the role of Queen Elizabeth II in "The Queen") was made a Dame Commander of the British Empire on December 2003.
