  1. He knows that he has secured his legacy and like Lennox Lewis, he quit and spend more time to his family and friends.

  2. Well, he never quite completely quit.

Like all champions, after his last big fight (which incidentally was September 27, 1927, a rematch he lost against Gene Tunney at age 32) he continued to do many, many boxing exhibitions. He also crosstrained in Judo, Wrestling, and Jiutitsu and even wrote a book on boxing.

He quit the professional championship boxing because, like all champions, he eventually had enough physically and mentally of the sport, and lost just enough speed and desire to start getting beat. He had a three year layoff and was never quite the same when he came back.

No matter, Dempsey was wealthy from his celebrated career and had little to prove. He was a superstar in his prime, so retiring was easy.

One thing for sure, Dempsey was a tough fighter. At his best, no one could touch him, and he is ranked in the top ten heavyweights of all time by most boxing experts. Watch some of his old clips on Youtube. He is just amazing. I always think he looks a little scrawny, but once he starts hitting, look out. I think even the big super heavies of today would be in trouble with Dempsey.

    Cheers.

  3. His last pro fight occurred when he was 32, but he continued to fight exhibitions long after his pro career ended.  As far as why he stopped boxing- its pretty simple really; he knew he was passed his prime and could no longer compete at the highest level like he used to.  I think that he got screwed in the rematch with Gene Tunney due to the "long count" but the fact remained that he got comprehensively outboxed in both matches with Tunney.  If it had been the Dempsey of a few years back, he would have beaten Tunney.  It happens to all great fighters and Dempsey was no exception.  He had a great run as the heavyweight champion of the world and when he was champ, he was THE most recognizable name in all of sports- tens of thousands came to his fights and he never disappointed.  Thats why he is considered to be one of the best heavyweights of all time- no one carried the division and popularized it like he did; when he fought it was bigger than any other sporting event including baseball, basketball, and football.  He is considered an icon and deservedly so.
