Why did my cactus explode?

too much water, cacti are used to hot dreary desert-like temperature therefore not used to the water

Yep, too much water.   Cacti will do that.

If you live in an area of the country that has been getting excessive rains, maybe the water you gave it was the straw that broke the camel's back.  

Cacti can stand long periods of drought, so all they really need is maybe an inch a month (I'm guessing on that) to stay healthy.

u need to water ur cactus twice a week only not everyday... they like dry soil.
