Why did my doves die?

i had 2 baby fantailed doves about 2-3 weeks old and the older one died first. it was so sad. i fed them kaytee exact baby bird formula. he just had diarihia and started feeling sick and throwing up and died the next morning. then my second bird lived about 1 and half weeks longer and the same thing happend to her. but the day before she died she was very active and seemed happy. i just dont understand what i did wrong. was it a disease?? did this happen to anybody els? please help i really want to know if i may have done anything wrong

you have the option of doing this. you don't have to.

you can find an avian vet & they will do an autopsy and find out what illness they had....and it will be the only solid answer you would get.

other than that they very well may have died from being dehydrated. fast metabolisum. they can't take much and do die quickly.

just for future birds if the minute you notice they are not well even just a little bit.....an avian vet needs to see them the sooner the better...if one dies it's even more important to get the remaining birds exams......most just don't last that long when ill....

very very very hard to say exactly why they died. handfeeding birds is very difficult and varies from breed to breed. so much could of happened it's so hard to say it was this or that.....

did you get or buy these very yound birds from someone or a pet store? most states have laws against selling unweaned birds.....yours may not.....it's just a thought....

do you have the parents, the male and female that hatched the eggs? if they were being good parents it's best to let them feed them.....and they will wean them onto solid food. but if they were bad parents....you had no choice & had to feed them....so there is that idea....

birds will hide their illness out of instincts.....so there is also that problem in the way.....

the kaytee exact....may not of been the right one for that breed......and i say may not because i am not sure of the whole situation. if it was recommended by a breeder or a vet then that will rule it out as a problem.....

when young birds don't have their parents for whatever reason a lot can go wrong. this is a good lesson in why avian vets and qualified breeders are best to have on call for any needs. even by phone. we drive 40 minutes to get to the best avian vet around here. but if you don't want to you don't have to....it's just best to have new birds examined when you get them. not saying you are bad for not doing it. just an idea for next time.
