  1. because donuts have holes


  2. Donuts are deep fried. If they were solid, they would have to be really small. With the hole in the middle, they'll cook evenly. Otherwise you would have a well cooked outside with a runny raw inside.

  3. so the captain would have some place to put the donut on the wheel, so they could deal with steering the ship when the weather was bad , something to that effect heard it on a cooking show

  4. So they are easier to hold.

  5. So you can put you finger inside!
