Why do gemstones have to breath?

there are holes in the back of preshesh jewelry ,because gemstones need to breath ... why is this necessary ????

What is preshesh?  I know that in some Indian beliefs and in crystal healing, it is advised that the back of a gemstone be open (not covered by the metal mounting) so that its energy can travel directly to the person's body.

But breathing would imply that air moves through a gemstone, which it does not.
