Why do people get piercings???

Question

Sooooo, its prety straight foward, just want to know why people get them, I've got to do this anoying english project and it would be great if you guys could share your opinion with me.

I got my belly button pierced when I was 15, and I did it to impress/get the attention of a boy, believe it or not. But you know what, it worked and now I'm married to him! (I'm 22 now)

beacause our society has acceptedededed et... esp. ear peircings. almost every store in the mall you can fine earings at..

they are looking for a specific arua by having the piercings. by adding on them as an accessory, they try to complete a certain look.

It's considered by some to be a fashion accessory and some people get pierced in order to have a certain look/ be considered part of a certain bunch, and some people just think it's cool.

i get my pericings not onli cuz i think they look cool..for myself.. im not trying to draw attention, but it makes me feel good.. i like them.. it expresses my idividuality against society =D.

for most people it's just something to do in keeping with trends and fashion.

i have my belly button and tongue pierced as well as my ears. i wouldn't get anything else pierced.

i wasn't trying to be cool or in i just wanted to get them done.

i had my belly done first than several years later i got my tongue done

Good idea for a project, first of all.

I see it as, people like to decorate themselves.

(I have two tattoos, and I had a lipring up until recently.)

I just liked how it looked, and wanted to say "yeah, I DID that, I was a crazy kid, and I tried new things."

I've heard piercings referred to as an addiction, but that's a rather close-minded term, probably from conservative people, who think there's something "wrong" with it.

Some people think it's s**y, while others think it's sickening.

For some, it's the pain.  Pain can cause sexual arousal.

But again, good idea for a project...pretty phychological ... you can get alot of different sides of the story.

Because they're pretty ^^.  I've got 7, and slightly different motivations for getting different ones.  My first set was basic earrings when I was 2; I suspect I wanted pretty earrings like mommy had, but I don't even remember getting them.  Then the summer after eighth grade, I got a cartilage piercing after having been inspired by (barf) *NSync's Justin Timberlake.  Sometime after that my little sister went to get her ears pierced (she'd left an earlier ear piercing out too long), so I decided to get a second lobe piercing so we could do it together.  Then, 2 years ago, she got permission to get her bellybutton pierced, so I came along and got another cartilage piercing.  And finally, a year ago, I saw a picture Japanese rockstar Miyavi with a lip ring, and decided to get that done, too.

Wow, I can blame music and my sister for most of my piercings...

A few reasons. It's self expression for a lot of people - making a point. Being a rebel.

For most, it's just because they like it and enjoy how it looks and feels. Just like someone might enjoy wearing lipgloss, or heels, or jeans or the color blue.

It makes you look prettier (referring to earrings).  It accentuates certain body parts...like a bellybutton. In addtion, getting piercings at specific places such as nipples and nose for guys makes people the focal point of attention. And least but not the last, in certain societies/cultures such as Indian its considered as a repersentation of the culture....Hope this helps :)

From a person who loves piercings, I like the pain. It sounds weird but I get an adrenaline rush from it and I think piercings can help show individuality. They also look great on most people.

i just ABSOLUTELY love piercings, i love the adrenaline rush, i love tha whole process, once i get one i want more, they really interest me and there addictive, and never EVER judge some1 who is modified, tattooed or pierced unless you know exactly what it is like, and it does not have ANYTHING to do with there personality, i am sick to death of people thinking that you are a dead beat with no brains because of your modification/piercings. it is a great way to personalize your body, i dont think that any1 can tell you what to do with your body, if you want to pierce it, thats your own choice.

Some people just get piercings so they think there cool and hip or they want to stand out. On the whole though most people get piercings because they like them and that's what they r into its just like people who get tattooed

1. For the general appearance of it.

Some people just feel better about themselves when they look in the mirror, and see body modifications such as piercings.

2. Increase pleasure.

Not sure if you could include this one in your English project, but some people get tongue and genital piercings to increase sexual pleasure.

3. Enjoy the inital feeling.

Some people just love the feeling, the adrenaline rush when the needle is put through and the jewellery is inserted. People who like this feeling may also engage in "play piercing", in which needles are put through as if they are being pierced, but jewellery isn't actually inserted (or with things like back corsets, piercing is put in for a few hours at the most, for something like a photo shoot.)

4. Tradition/religion.

Some religions hold ceremonies to celebrate perhaps the passage into adulthood, and mark this by a particular piercing, most commonly the nose (nostril or septum).

5. Fashion statement.

Some people want to stand out... they want people to know that they don't follow the trends. So, an unusual/unpopular piercing is just the way to do that :)
