Why do people toot their horns?

I had to drop some people off at the airport this morning. I've never been to the airport before. I was able to find my way to the terminal to drop them off and then, when I went to pull out people kept tooting their horns at me. I had no idea why....did they want me to stay put? Did they want me to go and get out of the way so they could pull in? I had no idea. I said to myself, "Yes, I'm stupid and NO I don't know what I am doing and your toottalling is not giving me any additional or usefull information.

  1. Could be any one of a number of reasons.  They may be telling you that you are doing something wrong (like going the wrong way on an access ramp, leaving your vehicle unattended or entering a restricted area).  They may be telling you to stay where you are (which is rude, I admit...) so they may pass.  They may also be asking you to move your vehicle so they can access the loading area.  You may also have something amiss with your vehicle (a light that is out, a soft tire, or a door ajar; that may be why they're all tooting at you.  Good luck!

  2. It's a warning, in any traffic situation, that you are doing something wrong and they are trying to alert you before you cause an accident. But not being familiar with the airport you were at, I can't say for sure what it was you were doing wrong. Most bigger airports have certain lanes for drop-off, and lanes that are for through traffic only and not supposed to be blocked, etc. There should be signs, but sometimes they can be confusing.

  3. we were trying to tell you there was luggage on the roof of your car...after it fell off we quit honking
