Why do people use lol unnecessarily? ?

i guess its become a habit to do so but 'lol' can be used when its a joke for a loud laugh otherwise ppl should use 'smiles' or 'hahaha' or 'hehehe' ~ i guess so ~ thanks ~ tc!

The use of lol is,to say the least fatuous.It is used in almost every imaginable context ,most of the time without even knowing why.Maybe because it is thought that it is the "in" thing to use to show others that the user "belongs".

It is a way people share emotions in a world full of text.  LoL makes the conversation casual.  No one uses LoL in real life conversation because we have body language, facial expression, gestures to show our emotions, something words on paper can't quite relay.

Well, who can really tell why people act the way they do? The artificial people will graduate from school and realize no one cared. So in essence, stop caring, and it will get your point across.

where I live and in my group of people I text or IM, "lol" has become the equivalent to "That was really not that funny. *sarcastic laughing*"

hahaha or BAH! hahaha gets the message across better. lmao is okay too. But the short laugh phrases just exist so you don't have to say "that was funny! I'm laughing!"
