Why do some states...???

i was just wondering why most states in the u.s. make you pump your own gas but some like nj where i live dont... serious answers please

in NJ it's "illegal" to pump ur own gas

but in CA u have to pump ur own gas

Originally, all gas pumps were operated by station attendants.  I was once told that when the New Jersey Turnpike was being built, the political geniuses knew that  if people pumped gas themselves, and then went inside to pay and buy goodies, there would be long lines waiting at the pumps and no gas sold, and it could be dangerous.  So, it was decided to be fair, to make all pumps be attendant operated.

There are a handful of states like NJ.  I've traveled in NJ and understand the state law of not pumping your own gas.  It'll change someday.  Don't you know the law that requires your gas to be pumped by an attendant, seriously?
