    A film of tear consists of three layers, an outer LIPID layer which prevents dessication of the eye, or "drying out," and inner "aqueous" layer with SALTS and proteins such as lysozyme which has antibacterial activity and an inner mucinous layer consisting of a glycoprotein called "mucin" which acts to lubricate the eye and prevent scratching of the cornea
