Question:

Why does my cat meow?

I have a 7 year old cat named Keander (weird name). He rarely meows to anything and he's a very old and tired cat who loves to eat. I leave him on my bed for 2-3 hours as I go on the computer. When I finally approach him after 2-3 hours, Keander makes a very loud "meow." I don't know why he makes such a loud meow when he rarely meows to anybody except me.

Can you please tell me as to what my cat is saying when he meows like that?

  1. It means that your cat loves you and in a way is saying 'hi'.

My cat does that too. Sometimes when she is asleep I go up to her and stroke her and she lets out a huge meow and gives me a cute look, and then rolls onto her back to be petted.

It's just a way of affection and a sign that your cat's happy :)

She does that with everyone though. Maybe get someone else to do that to your cat and see how he reacts. I'm sure it'll be much the same reaction. Cat's can like many people, as long as they're good to them.

  2. Meow can mean a lot of things.  Does he seem to want something or does it seem like he's just chatting?  You'll probably have to guess based on his body language.  Cats mostly communicate non-verbally with each other and save the noise for us non-cats.  So he's probably telling you something, most likely nothing critical or he would make more noise then that - so probably just being chatty.

The cats I've had generally prefer someone but I've never had one who only talked to one person.  So yeah, it may mean that you're his favorite person, especially since he spends so much time with you. That doesn't mean he dislikes anyone else, just that he likes you more.

    btw, 7 isn't very old :)

  3. Cool cat name. My cat hardly ever meows either, except when I first get home and ask him if he missed me. Then he'll meow. I think he's just glad he's getting attention, and it's his way of talking to you and kind of saying hello.
