Why does my iPhone 3g overheat?

I downloaded like 8 apps for my 16 gigabyte iPhone 3g and I used aim for almost 30 minutes and it was very hot and was overheating? Any ideas why this happens?

I synced mine today for 4 hours and it was so hot.  I checked online, apparently it is normal for it to heat up, something to do with the surface area of it works to cool it down quickly.

That will occur with any electronic device that uses a battery.
