Question:

Why does shutdown take so long?

Ok, so my grandmother has been pestering me with this question for the past week and since she won't listen to anything I say, she insisted I post a question on yahoo!answers....

So, her computer works fine, but when she goes into the start menu to click "shut down" it take a few minutes for the "standby, shutdown, restart" menu to pop up and when it finally does and she clicks shutdown, it take another 3-4 minutes for the computer to actually shut down.

Any ideas on what may be causing this?

Any help is greatly appreciated

  1. I would recommend you to clear the startup. It might be possible that there would be many programs that are running at the startup...so it might be slow. Please follow the below steps to make it fast.

    Click on Start --> Run

Type in the box 'msconfig' and then click 'ok'.

Now click on 'selective startup' and then uncheck the option which says 'load startup items'

Then click on 'apply' and then click on 'close'. It would ask you to restart the system. Just go ahead and do it.

    That should resolve the issue.

  2. hmm sounds like your computer is shutting slow because of the junk that is running in the background

    dowload c cleaner http://www.ccleaner.com/

c cleaner is a free clean up utilty that cleans your computer of tempory files and browser cookies that dramaticlly slow down you computer

    HOW TO USE

1# go to http://www.ccleaner.com/ and download c cleaner

2# find where you saves the file then run the installer and install the program

3# open up cleaner and click the "analize" button and this will search for tempory files and junk thats slowing it down

4# after its finished scanning click "run cleaner" and this will clean all the junk thats taking the space of your computer up

5# undernieth the clean up tab click the registy tab now click anerlize

6# now after thats done click run cleaner and this will clean your computer of all startup and shutdown issues

dont worry about deleting tempary files as they are not information you need, there just junk running in the back ground.

    PERFORMENCE TRICK

just by adjusting the performance can rapidly inrease the speed of shut down and start up

    to do this

1# right click my computer and select propities

2# now select advanced and click the performance button

3# now select the box adjudt for best performance

4# now you should see all the boxs unticked

5# now scroll down to the bottom of that list and tick the bottom two boxs, the reason for this is so you dont loose any visual effects when disabling most items

6# now hit apply then ok

your computer should be a lot faster now both start up wise and shutdown

  3. it could just be that when your grandmother leaves it on, or leaves a program open, other files are turned on, and turning off the physical computer involves turning off the "hidden" programs as well as the normal programs opened.

if your grandmother can, tell her to log out of her name, then shut down the computer. it might be faster. but im not sure.
