Why doesnt my cat pur?

Question

My cat rarely ever purrs and my other cats are ALWAYS purring. why does this one cat not pur?

My kitty didn't start purring until she was about 3 months old. When she does purr, it is usually when I am scratching her ears, and she is falling asleep. Cats are funny little critters...who knows why they do the weird things they do!

Not all cats audibly purr.  I had a cat for 18 years that only "clicked" and even then, it took 14 years for him to get to that stage!  To tell if he was happy, I had to look at his body language as a whole.  

If your cat does not seem upset, I wouldn't worry about it.  Maybe put a finger to his neck and see if you can feel any vibrations.

All kitties have different personalities. 2 of my cats never purr either, but my 1 purrs when I just look at her.

try petting near its but/tail while it eats my cat loves that and always pur when i do it

Most of these answers are really good.  If you really want to judge your cats emotions, pay more attention to its body language (especially the tail).  You can tell a lot about how a cat is feeling by the way it moves.  They may not purr, but if their tail is waving slowly, this is generally a sign of contentment.  Rapid jerks of the tail generally show annoyance.  Don't worry if your cat isn't purring.  I have 3 - 2 are purr machines and the other one has a very light vibration in his throat that you can only feel but not hear.  And he's the happiest cat in the world.

Some kitties purr silently. You have to feel their throat to tell. But you can't really hear it.

Hi I don't think you need to worry about that as long as your cat is healthy and friendly. My cat hisses at just everybody and hardly comes to you. But she is very happy in her small world.

i guess you aren't being nice enough to your cat... love is always the key. the way i get my cat to purr is by feeding it sometimes and occasionally not hitting it.

Not all cats purr!  Apparently, a lot of feral cats don't purr, and some house cats don't purr either.

because that cat just plainly does not like you what so ever. a cat only purrs when it likes you and you scratch its neck just right.

You cant always hear your kitty purr... another way to tell if it is content is to watch it's tail... if its moving slowly its happy, if its straight or not moving at all its not happy and may be ready to pounce.
