Why is Mexicos gas so cheap?

Question

Compared to the U.S. and most other countries its dirt cheap. Why is this?

I keep seeing articles about how people in California are commuting to Mexico not only to fill up their tanks but also big containers, isnt this illegal somehow? I mean, California and every other state has a hefty state sales tax attached to the sale of gasoline, so wouldnt the government crack down on those people because they're not making any money off of them?

Carrying big cans of gasoline in your car is illegal.  Mexico has cheap gas because their demand is low and the supply is more than adequate.  Furthermore, Mexican speculators aren't involved with gasoline futures.  America is a greedy nation and this gas situation has finally caught up with us.  I remarked to my wife several years ago that we had better buy a small 4 cylinder car because gas will go up precipitously. Reason, I saw these huge SUVs on the road with enormous gas tanks and lousy gas mileage.  You had to be a dummy not to understand what was coming.

They dilute it... seriously. I live in Texas and have made multiple trips there.

Mexico's oil is owned by the government and there are few gas stations which are all state owned, so there is huge supply but no demand since most Mexicans cannot find a gas station.

One huge problem with those gas stations in Mexico besides that there are so few of them is very few of them take credit cards and use out of date technology that the US hasnt used since the 60s
